5 Holiday Style Hacks

by Lani Kim

‘Tis the season to celebrate the holidays with friends and family. But for many it can also be the season to stress. Be it balancing time with loved ones or your budget, this time of year can be fraught. Ramping up the anxiety for many is the undeniable fact that 2021 is our second pandemic era holiday season and, well, you know what we’re talking about. But what does this mean for your holiday style? Work parties are happening again in some parts of the country, others are opting for the safety of virtual gatherings. Then there’s the whole traveling to see family thing. Here are the five most common holiday style dilemmas and how to solve them.

Virtual Reality

Still stuck on Zoom again this holiday season? To this we say, rock your frock if you please. If not, you can still opt for some sparkle on that sweater for your virtual work party or Christmas Eve screen time with your parents who live across the country.

The positive side of a virtual event is that you can express yourself any way you choose, everyone is beyond judging fashion choices via webcam (or should be). And if they’re not, leave the meeting and feign tech issues (another plus of virtual).

All options are on the table in this party situation. Choose a comfy sweater with leggings, or the fanciest cocktail dress in your closet, it’s about face time, not show time.

Dress Code Breaking

After last year’s socially distant holiday season, we are craving personal interactions again. If you’re willing and able to venture back into party season, then you will once again come face to face with the dreaded dress code. Business casual. Black tie. Creative black tie. Dressy casual. Cocktail attire. Formal attire. It’s enough to make even the best blow out go limp.

We believe in the fashion rule that there is no such thing as being overdressed. While you may feel out of place in your Shimmer Blouson dress as you chat with Brad from accounting in his plaid untucked button down, everyone will remember what you wore. The White House Black Market Party Style collection is our curated selection of dresses, skirts, and accessories to make dressing for the holidays effortless, no matter where you’re going or whom you’ll be with.

And if casual is your signature style, we got you covered with our Denim Couture collection that includes everything from a denim version of our Signature Blazer, to dresses, and of course, jeans. Fashion fact: opt for coated denim for added glam.

One Dress, Many Parties

Whether you’ve RSVP’d all over town, or you’re on a budget (and who isn’t these days?), you need one knock out number in your closet that can go day to night to date night. And we all know what that is, right? The LBD. The Little Black Dress is a classic for a reason (thank you, Coco Chanel), it’s always a sophisticated, flattering, and modern choice. And it’s easy to change the look of your fave LBD with accessories like jewelry, shoes, and jackets. Substitute your black flats for a leopard print pump, add a statement necklace, a faux fur bolero, and you’ve morphed from work party appropriate to cocktail chic in minutes.

Holiday Style Goes on the Road

You’re doing it. You’ve booked the ticket and are ready to hit the holidays in another state. Go on, check the forecast in your weather app, but no matter if your ultimate destination is a balmy 85 degrees or an ice-chilled 30 degrees, you’ll want to pull out the stops.

Some Like It Hot

If you’re heading somewhere tropical for the holidays (lucky you, btw), make sure your clothes suit the heat. Lightweight, flowy dresses are a great look. Opt for femme florals such as this uber flattering Sleeveless Iris Print Midi Dress or this Mixed Print Chiffon Maxi Dress, both evoke summer while being polished enough for dinner on the beach in Key West, or for sharing turkey dinner with your in-laws in South Carolina. And should you need to cover up, a wrap is the go-to, consider this sexy Sequin Wrap.

North by Northwest

If you’re a southern belle heading north for the holidays, you’ll want to layer up. But wearing a coat doesn’t need to detract from your signature style. It’s all in the silhouette. This Faux Mink Drawstring Coat is instant glamour and hits just below the hips making it perfect for pants and jumpsuits, but its special enough to work over dresses too. But if a long over lean look is your goal, this Statement Coat, in a gorgeous plum shade will made an entrance and keep you cozy.

As we prepare for another holiday season, rest assured that in 2021, wear what you want, choose your style, be you.
